Recycle & Sew

Sewing, dressmaking, pattern-cutting & soft furnishing. Group classes & private tuition.

You can join a group class at any time of the calendar year, depending on availability - there are no set autumn, spring or summer terms. All the classes are at different venues and you can start with just one class or commit to a block of six and then be eligible to get one free. With this choice you should be able to find somthing thats meets your requirements but if nothing is suitable you could opt for private tuition.

Group classes are very informal and suitable for everyone from the complete beginner to the intermediate with some experience as well as the more advanced dressmaker. They are ideal if you want to tailor-make your learning experience as students work on own their own projects. Dressmaking, including working from a standard paper pattern, pattern drafting either from scratch or adapting a pattern, and garment alterations as well as making soft furnishings and other craft items are all suitable projects for the group classes. There venues are spacious with plenty of tables so you can sew both big and small projects.

The topics covered in the session are not timetabled or structure but each session usually includes several demonstrations that the whole group can watch covering a particular dressmaking, pattern cutting or soft furnishing technique, or a sewing machine or overlocker skills.

You can bring your own sewing machine or borrow one of ours. There are several overlocker machines and a chainstitcher available. An iron and ironing board is provided along with basic dressmaking equipment to use during the class. There is also a limited supply of haberdashery supplies to purchase at very reasonable rates. It is advisable to bring a basic sewing kit of your own to the class.
